Many of the workshops and projects I deliver are for individual organisations, schools or communities. However here you can find all my public workshops that are open to everyone. I look forward to meeting you at one of them soon.

Due to the current national lockdown in England I am currently delivering no workshops in person. If you were due to be attending a workshop you will be contacted by the venue who will give you further information about date changes etc.

Mini Make at Midday Series

Mini Make at Midday is continuing! We have extended the series due to it’s popularity! Thanks everyone who has joined us so far for some making fun!

The story behind Mini Makes: I have joined with Jo, owner of Chirpy in Chapel Allerton to bring you a series of workshops each Thursday from Midday via Zoom. This workshop is open to everyone, maybe you’re working from home and would welcome an escape between meetings, or maybe you fancy the opportunity to have a natter with others as you craft. Whatever the reason we can’t wait to see you virtually at the Zoom workshop.

Needle Felted Flowers – 11th March 2021 – We will be needle felting our own flowers either to turn into small brooches or adding stems so that they can be displayed in a vase. This might just make a great Mothers Day workshop!

Spring Woven Wall Hanging – 18th March 2021 – Back by popular demand! Join us to create your own woven wall art on a gorgeous sunny yellow frame. If you have attended the previous Mini Make I will be sharing with you further weaving techniques and tips to extend your knowledge.

Woven Coasters – 25th March 2021 – Back by popular demand! Join us to learn how to make your own coasters by weaving around and around. If you have attended the previous Mini Make I will be sharing with you further weaving techniques and tips to extend your knowledge.

Stitched Woven Easter Egg Decorations – 1st April 2021 – Join us to learn how to create your own little Easter egg decorations by wrapping, stitching and weaving different yarns.

Spring Fabric Wreath Workshop

Join together with us on Zoom to make your own bespoke Spring Fabric Wreath.

Create your very own spring wreath to display at home with pride. Learn how to tie your own wreath using a gorgeous selection of pre-cut fabric stripes in a range of colours and textures.

This is a perfect workshop to do with someone over Zoom you might not have been able to meet up with in person for a long time. The wreath would make a jolly mothers day gift as well as a cheerful spring wreath to display all the way through Easter as well.

Woven Easter Egg

Enjoy an evening via Zoom learning how to weave your own Easter egg wall art. During this workshop you will learn some different weaving techniques to incorporate into your weaving as well as how to create a beautiful piece to decorate your home with this Easter. This workshop is perfect for beginners.

You will receive everything you need via a kit in the post and then you can join the live Zoom workshop with others allowing us all to enjoy making with other people whilst also being at home. It is a great way to be inspired by each other as well as an opportunity to have a chat as well.

Woven Easter Egg - Wall Art - details square - Agnis Smallwood
Hessian Ribbon Cushion Cover Workshop

Join together with us on Zoom to weave your own Hessian Ribbon Cushion Cover.

Your kit will include a large piece of hessian, enough to design both the front and back of your 14 inch square cushion cover. As well as the hessian you will also receive a whole host of colourful ribbons in a range of different widths and colours to create your own unique bespoke design.

This workshop will take place on Zoom allowing us all to meet safely and enjoy making with other people whilst also being at home, during the lockdown period. It is a great way to be inspired by each other as well as an opportunity to have a chat as well.

Please note the inner cushion pad is not included for this workshop.

You will each have your own loom meaning that both can experience working on the looms.

Enjoy a day learning to weave. A fun introduction to the basics of weaving on a loom whilst also producing your own folded purse. The looms will be set up and warped for you ahead of the workshop, meaning that you get to enjoy a whole day just weaving. These workshops are aimed at those who have some experience of weaving already, you may have attended our beginners weaving course, and are keen to be able to weave your own short project but are not quite ready for going it all alone. Weaving on Looms at Sunny Bank Mills - Intermediate Weaving Course

This 5 week course is aimed those who may have been on the beginners weaving course or already have some experience of weaving on a shaft loom.

The course will take you through the process of setting up a loom through to weaving a final outcome. You will learn how to design and make a warp and how to dress the loom. You will also select and input the pattern you wish to use into the dobby. You will be rewarded for your hard work by weaving your own project at the end!

You will be in a small class, giving plenty of opportunity to ask questions and receive 1 to 1 support and tailored tuition throughout the workshops as well as watching group demonstrations.

Please note that some initial weaving knowledge is assumed.

Dressing the loom requires some dexterity, however support is available should this be welcomed.

Every Thursday beginning 29th April 2021 for 5 weeks 10:00 – 13:00

Woven Fabric
Weaving on Looms at Sunny Bank Mills -
Cushion Cover

A fun introduction to the basics of weaving on a loom whilst also producing your own rectangular cushion cover top. The looms will be set up and warped for you ahead of the workshop, meaning that you get to enjoy a whole day just weaving. The course will enable you to weave sufficient fabric to either make, the front of a cushion cover, a full simple cushion or enough fabric to applique onto an existing cover. Please note that there will not be time within the workshop to complete your cushion cover – a nice project for when you are at home.

You will be in a small class, maximum of 6, giving you plenty of time to ask questions and receive 1 to 1 as well as group support throughout the workshop. You will have the opportunity to choose from a range of yarns, different thicknesses and colours to create your very own bespoke design.

Developing Weave Skills: Colour

The workshop is all about colour. Knowing which colours to combine can be tricky especially when you have both a warp and a weft to think about. Feeling confident about using colour can transform the outcomes that you weave. In this workshop you will learn about colour theory, exploring mixing colours together and create yarn wraps. In the afternoon you will weave some samples that will draw on the knowledge learnt in the morning session.

Please note there will not be time to create an outcome but rather some small samples.

Refresher Weekend Weaving Course

This short course is aimed at those that would like a refresher, maybe you learnt to weave a few years ago. Maybe you have a loom in a loft or at the back of a garage but need a bit of a reminder of how to get started. This intense 2 day course will cover the full process of how to set up a loom through to weaving a final outcome. You will learn how to design and make a warp and how to dress the loom. You will also select and input the pattern you wish to use into the dobby. You will be rewarded for your hard work by weaving a short project.

This course will move swiftly through each element as it assumes that participants will have learnt this in depth before. The course focuses less on providing lots of time for students to weave but rather as a refresher on how to get weaving once again.

Please note that some initial weaving knowledge is assumed. Dressing the loom requires some dexterity, however support is available should this be welcomed.

Rag Rug Brooch Workshop

Enjoy a morning learning how to use a rag rug technique to create a flower brooch. You will be able to choose from a wide range of fabrics enabling you to create your own bespoke outcome. As well as going home with a finished brooch you will also learn how you can continue to recycle your favourite fabrics. We will also explore how to combine different colours as well as creating different petal shapes.

These brooches make a lovely gift. This workshop is perfect for beginners. No need to bring anything, all materials will be provided.

Developing Weave Skills: Warp

This one day workshop takes you through the process of designing and making a warp and how to dress the loom. This workshop may be of interest to those who have a loom at home but have forgotten how to add a warp to their loom, but are keen to be able to get weaving once again.

You will have time to practice creating a warp and threading up the looms here at Sunny Bank but please note that there will not be time within this workshop to weave, you will rather be going home with new knowledge.

July 2021
Weaving on Looms at Sunny Bank Mills -
Beginner's Weaving Course

A 5 week course for those who would like to explore and develop their weaving more. You may be a complete beginner or have done a peg loom weaving course or woven on a rigid heddle loom but are keen to develop your skills. Looms will already be set up and warped so there is plenty of time to concentrate on weaving! Each of the 6 looms will be set with a different pattern so that you can explore a different technique, (e.g. plain weave, twill) by rotating around.

You will spend the first three weeks exploring different weave patterns whilst learning about your loom.

The final two weeks will be dedicated to weaving your own final project, this could be a table runner, cushion cover or scarf for example. With support you will be guided as to how to achieve your designed outcome.

At the end of the course you will take home a range of samples, as well as one final finished item.

Drop Spindle Vertical
Drop Spindle Spinning Workshop

Learn to spin on a drop spindle. This workshop is perfect for those who love the idea of being able to introduce their own bespoke spun elements into their craft projects. You will learn how to spin on a drop spindle as well as how to use the Andean plying method to ply your spun yarn together. Throughout this day workshop you will use natural fibres in a range of different colours allowing you to design and create your own hand spun yarn. You will have the opportunity to create your own unique colour palette, allowing you to explore colour and how they work together when combined. No need to bring anything along as everything will be provided!

This workshop is aimed at beginners with no previous spinning experience and will focus on learning the skills and techniques needed to spin on a drop spindle as well as ply your spun yarn together. Some dexterity is needed for this workshop. Please note that you will be leaving the class with skills and knowledge for you to continue this new craft at home. You will also leave with some spun yarn on this beginners workshop but not enough for your next large knitting project

Peg Loom Weaving - Woven Cushion Cover Top

This workshop is perfect for beginners and you will be supported as you create your own unique cushion top design. I will guide you from the initial design stage and the selection of materials through to the setup and hand weaving process. You will weave your very own unique piece of fabric to take home with you.

– Explore different coloured yarns and textures

– Both man-made and natural materials.

– Learn how to warp up the loom.

– Learn how to weave on the loom.

– Try a range of different techniques to use within your piece of work.

Please note there will not be time within the workshop to sew your woven cushion top into a final cushion, you will leave with a square piece of fabric to then sew at home later.

Christmas Festive Workshops 2021

Christmas workshops are always hugely popular each year.

You might like to join in a workshop taking place at different venues across Yorkshire or have your own private workshop with friends or family. These can either be in person or kits can be posted out with the workshop taking place over Zoom.

Creative Careers Resource for Teachers

I love sharing about the many creative jobs and opportunities there are within the Creative Industries, especially within craft and textiles.
